Welcome to the SMART Centre

We have put together a short introductory video to support your visit to the SMART Centre which we hope you find useful.

Our History

SMART Services result from the integration of two groups of services that were formerly on two separate sites: Rehabilitation Engineering Services (RES) and the Mobility Centre.

Rehabilitation Engineering Services was located on the site of the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital until 2002. This closed as part of the capital building plan to provide the new Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and resulted in the transfer of RES to the Eastern General Hospital from April 2002. The Mobility Centre was already based on the Astley Ainslie site but in non-ideal and outdated accommodation.

The new SMART centre was opened by Dr Lewis MacDonald, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care, on 26th February 2007. The building was designed by renowned architects Boswell, Mitchell and Johnson and built by Clark Contracts.
