Current news and events

More than 50 visitors enjoyed the chance to visit the SMART Centre recently. Feedback from the event has been very positive.

Visitors – who included health professionals as well as patients and carers – toured the centre’s specialist services, including how prosthetic limbs are made and adjusted, and the manufacture of special seating for wheelchairs. People were also interested to see how electronic assistive technology could help people with disability.

Modernisation manager Les Malone said: “People were genuinely keen to see the prosthetics workshops and fitting areas. One visitor said the most interesting aspect for him was how an artificial limb was assembled – from measuring to completion. Another said she was interested to see the adaptations that can be made to a wheelchair, and to find out where to get a Rutland trolley and gutter arms.”

Les added: “I’d like to say thank you to everyone who was involved in making this an enjoyable experience for everyone who attended.”
