A Disabled (or Independent) Living Centre (DLC) is a place where you can get free and impartial information and advice about equipment which can assist people who due to age, disability or illness have difficulty undertaking activities of daily living. At a DLC you can see and try out equipment and explore other solutions. Centres provide free information to people in person, by telephone, letter or email.
Lothian Disabled Living Centre is staffed by one full time equivalent Occupational Therapist and a part time administrator who can give advice to people who need help with daily living activities. The Occupational Therapist is able to advise and demonstrate a wide range of equipment and where possible equipment can be tried. To visit is strictly by appointment only. There is no need to be referred; anyone wishing information can contact the Centre directly.
Professional staff (for example: Health and Social Work staff) are welcome to make an appointment to bring an individual they are working with to try equipment, this can help to reduce waiting times significantly.
There is a large range of display equipment on loan from companies which includes:
• Kitchen and bathroom equipment
• Powered wheelchairs and Scooters
• Walking equipment
Equipment cannot be purchased from the Centre.
When equipment is not available in the Centre, advice and information can be given and where possible approximate costs will be advised.
The Centre provides instruction courses in hoisting, manual and powered wheelchairs and bathing equipment. There is also a short term wheelchair hire service. There are charges for these services.
Throughout the year there are exhibition days that focus on specific subjects. Please contact the Centre for more details.
An answer phone is in operation when staff are unavailable. Please leave a message and your call will be returned either the same day or the following day.
The Lothian Disabled Living Centre is situated within the SMART Centre in the Astley Ainslie Hospital. The Centre is open office hours from Monday to Friday. It is essential to make an appointment before visiting.
Disabled parking is available for those who have a Blue Badge. Otherwise parking varies and may be limited. Bus stops are some distance away and may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
